Previous Mentors
Michelle Winkler
Michelle now attends UT Health MD Anderson in pursuit of her Ph.D. in Immunology. Her favorite lab memory was working this past summer as a mentor! She loves working with students and guiding them through research. Her favorite ice cream is sweet cream with pineapples and her favorite weather season is summer. Her interest in science stems from her love for cool geeky people and complex problem solving! We wish our lab mom the best!
Nico Rago
Nico goes to medical school at UT Health San Antonio to pursue emergency medicine or anesthesiology. His science inspirations were Bill Nye and his 7th grade science teacher. If he’s ever craving a coffee he recommends Epoch. He loves winter, dogs and horror films. His one tip for students is to go to as many concerts as you can!!
Jess Lynch
Jess was a biology, ecology, evolution and behavior; she is now in the workforce to determine what area of conservation biology she want to go to grad school for. Her favorite season is spring because she loves identifying all the flowers during that time. Her favorite thing to do is go to EDM shows or festivals.
Jevons Wang
Jevons is currently studying at McGovern Medical School at UT Health Science Center Houston in pursuit of his MD. He’s an ardent fan of the outdoors, astronomy, and photography. He hopes to pursue a career either in emergency medicine, surgery, or aerospace medicine. Being able to work together with the other students, mentors, and advisors were some of the best moments of his time at UT. One piece of advice he would offer to current SMS students is to take advantage of the great resources available to you at UT, and especially in the SMS stream.
Mitchell Telles
Mitchell graduated with a BS in human biology and is studying at the School of Pharmacy at UT Austin! He plans to specialize in neonatal pharmacy or perform research in drug discovery. His one tip for students is to not use acetone to clean well plates (shhh it dissolves them)! His favorite memory in lab is working on the Cachaça project. His favorite place to eat in Austin is Gordoughs!
David Portillo
David has continued his studies at UT in organic chemistry. His favorite part of working with SMS has been befriending all the mentors and meeting so many different people. He’s a Ravenclaw and his favorite cafe in Austin is Bennu. David’s interest in science stems from his natural curiosity of knowing how things works. His one tip for students is to pursue their calling.
Tanya Herrera
Tanya currently works at TOMAGWA Healthcare Ministries as a medical assistant and will be studying at UT Southwestern in the Physician Assistant program in 2019. SMS has helped her lead a team in at her job because she has the most experience with lab work. Her one piece of advice to students is to take advantage of your time at UT, there are so many free resources that shouldn't be taken for granted.
Nathan Berryhill
Nathan is currently working as a Legislative Admin Support for the Texas Senate here at the Capitol in Austin, Texas. He is currently applying for a master's degree in Computer Science.
